God, I’m Broke... What Do I Do Now?

From Rock Bottom to Breakthrough: Why Being Broke Isn’t the End of Your Story

Jheesh. It’s a humbling reality to face and I promise you, you’re not alone. Whether you’re staring at your bank account wondering how to stretch your last $20, or just feeling stuck in a cycle of lack, this is your moment to move forward.

Today we’re diving into how to heal your money mindset, break unproductive financial habits, and most importantly, invite God into your financial journey so you can rise into the lender status He already promised you.

When the Lord your God blesses you as He has promised you, then you will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow; and you will rule over many nations, but they will not rule over you. - Deuteronomy 15:6

1. Unlearn What You Were Taught

Many of us weren’t raised with wealthy mindsets or millionaire mentors. We inherited beliefs like:

  • “Money doesn’t grow on trees.”

  • “We can’t afford that.”

  • “No one around here gets rich.”

  • "We have to wait till payday."

But here’s the truth: these narratives created a scarcity based money mindset. And while those close to us may have meant well, they often passed down principles they were taught that were rooted in fear and scarcity not financial wisdom. That stops with you.

Start by asking:

  • What did I learn about money growing up? How does that align to the reality of money?

  • What beliefs about wealth do I want to release today?

  • How have I personally partnered with unwise spending or lack?

Honesty is the first step to breakthrough.

2. Surrender the Stress

God is your source. Money is a resource.

It's natural for financial wellbeing to trigger anxiety, comparison, and overthinking. That’s why it’s so important to release the tight grip we have on money and invite God into the mix.

Remember: God is a gentleman. He won't force His way into areas we keep closed off. He waits for the invitation and it pleases Him to help. Don't let your pride or ego get in the way of asking for that help.

Reflection Prompt:

"How can I be honest with God about where i'm at financially and the reasons I'm here"

“Where do I need to see God show up in my finances?”
Is it an extra $500 a month? Debt relief? Wisdom for investments?

Don’t just stress about it, surrender it.

No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

- Matthew 6:24

3. Turn From Financial Misuse

Repentance is more than saying sorry, it’s choosing differently.

Let’s be real:

  • Are we overspending on things we don’t need?

  • Buying that $8 coffee daily when we're in more debt than we can pay?

  • Letting Amazon carts drain our funds?

Turning away from financial misuse looks like:
Budgeting realistically and sticking to it
Finding cost-effective alternatives
Asking God to replenish what we've misused and for guidance on stewardship

You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be willing to walk differently.

4. Tithe, Give God What Is His

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. - Malachi 3:10

Tithing is about honouring God with what already belongs to Him.

If you’ve ever questioned where your tithe is going, I get it. But remember, it’s not about controlling the outcome, it’s about your obedience and trusting God to handle the rest.

Ask God where He wants you to sow. Trust Him to guide your giving and have faith He will multiply your return.

5. Stay Ready: Wealth-Building Ideas When You Least Expect It

Now that you've surrendered, repented, and tithed… stay alert.

You’ve invited God into your finances, now expect Him to move.

Faith starts where understanding ends.

That might look like:

  • A side hustle idea during prayer

  • An unexpected job opportunity

  • A dream that keeps showing up

Write it all down. Bring it back to God in prayer. And trust He’ll guide your steps.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen - Hebrews 11:1

Quick Recap

  • Your financial habits may not be your fault, but they are your responsibility. Learned behaviours can be changed, break destructive patterns.

  • Money is a resource, not your source. Invite God into every financial decision and trust Him with the outcome.

  • Shift from poor spending habits to wise stewardship.

  • Return the first 10% to God as an act of worship and trust.

  • Expect fresh ideas, solutions, and income opportunities. Write them down and pray over them.
