3 Reasons You May Be Stuck

Have you ever found yourself cycling through the same habits, patterns, or relationships even though you know they're not good for you? You’ve prayed, journaled, made promises to yourself… and yet, you still end up back where you swore you'd never be.

You're not alone, you’ve found your people.

We often tell ourselves, “Once I achieve X, I’ll finally stop doing Y.”

Once I graduate... once I hit a certain income... once I get in a relationship... then I’ll stop overspending, drinking, smoking, gossiping, whatever it is.

But what happens when you get all the things you thought would fix it and you still can't move forward?

Still fighting the same battles. Still running in the same circles. Still feeling lost, disconnected, or like something’s missing.

How do you break the cycle? How do you get unstuck? And what might God be trying to show you in the midst of all this?

Made for More but

Settling for Less

Johanna was always clinging to something.

Sometimes it looked like a relationship.

Other times, it was a habit, overworking, staying busy, or striving for perfection.

Because deep down, she was trying to temporarily fill the void she had always carried.

And the distractions numbed the ache.

But beneath it all, she knew none of it was healing her, just keeping her going.

Still, she stayed in those cycles.

Because leaving them felt harder.

Letting go meant facing the silence. Facing herself. Facing the pain she was afraid to feel.

Years passed. The cycles repeated. Different seasons. Same patterns.

But eventually, she got tired.

Tired of surviving. Tired of settling. Tired of pretending peace.

Can you relate? Maybe you’re tired too. Tired of clinging to what you know isn't best for you.

But even in your readiness… you still feel stuck.

So how do you move forward?

I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do - Romans 7:15

1. You're Stuck in the Past

Letting go of the past can be one of the hardest things to do. There's moments where you may find yourself paralyzed by the weight of everything, maybe you’re dealing with the weight of past choices: debt, grief, regret over where you thought you'd be by now.

But here’s the hard, freeing truth:
What happened has happened and there’s truly nothing more you can do to change it.

The only way to change your story is through the actions you take moving forward.

It’s okay to cry about it. Write about it.

Even scream if you have to.

Grieve. Let that energy flow out of you. But at some point, you have to acknowledge that what’s behind you is in the past and what’s ahead of you is in God’s hands.

What God May Be Revealing:

"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland" - Isaiah 43:18-19

Stop dwelling on what was because God is doing something new in your life.

Take it from me, someone who has spent too much time stuck in the what if's and hypotheticals.

The truth is:
We won't always be 100% sure or 100% right. But He is 100% God.
And as long as we’re walking with Him and trusting Him, it will work out.

Have faith that even when you don’t understand why something happened, or whether you made the “right” decision, God is still with you.

2. Clinging to the Old

Ever played tug-of-war, clinging to that rope like your life depended on it?

That's sometimes how we attach to our habits, relationships, or thought patterns we need to let go of to step into a better version of ourselves.

I get it, it's not easy. We hold on because these things fill a real void in us: love, comfort, feeling heard or provided for.

What God May Be Revealing:

What you’re clinging to can never truly fill that void you need filled. It might make you feel good for a moment... distracted, hopeful even but that feeling fades. Over time, it takes more and more from you, and each time, a piece of your true self fades away.

God wants more for you. He alone can fill the deep needs we try so hard to satisfy. You deserve to feel loved, comforted, and supported and that fullness comes through Him.

Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. - John 5:8-9

Let go. It may be hard but staying in a cycle you're already worn out from is much harder. It may feel hard but you can do hard things.

3. Lack of Obedience

Ever know you should or shouldn’t do something and do the opposite anyway? Me too.

We often excuse it as a one-time thing, but reflect for a second, is it really just once, or are you in a pattern of knowing better but not doing better?

Let's stop excelling in all the other areas and disregarding what God is asking us to obey.

Disobedience is often why things are not unfolding the way we desire for it to.

True obedience means when God requires a shift, we act immediately, not on our own timing. Even when it feels silly, pointless, or inconvenient,

He knows what’s best.

Delayed obedience is still disobedience and I know some things can seem challenging but think about the important figures in your life, they've been able to impact you because they said "yes" and obeyed God's commands. Say yes to what God has for you as well.

58 I have sought your face with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise. 59 I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes. 60 I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands. -Psalm 119:58-60
